Located in the Sambalpur district of Orissa, Hirakud is a very small township. Though a small village it had started gathering lots of attention when in 1956, the famous Hirakud dam was built on the river Mahanadi which led up new opening for this small village, including agriculture and industrial growth. Nowadays we have some big companies like HINDALCO as well as National Aluminium company having their in this developing city. Mainly used for hydro-irrigation and power generation, Hirakud Dam has also started attracting hordes tourist in this small place and now it is one of the popular picnic and holiday spot.

You can also find the largest artificial lake here. If you see the list of top four largest dams in the world, Hirakud Dam will be in this list. These advantageous features have made the place extremely popular. Also the scenic beauty which you can see from over the dam is really breathtaking. The tranquility and wide spread flora and fauna species is really unique and special. Due to this dam, lots of aquatic activities have developed which attracts children and elders in this place. Forts and temples can also be found here like for example you can see the fort of the ruler of Sambalpur over here. Samalai Gudi is believed to be the most sacred temple of the entire locality of River Mahanadi and is dedicated to Goddess Samaleswari.

Budhraja Temple is located on the top of the Budhraja hill next to the Hirakud Dam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and being on the top of the hill, the scenic view from the temple is really amazing. Ushakothi Sanctuary is also a famous wildlife conservation park with species including tigers, gaur, elephants, bears, variety of Deer species and others. Also the 'Leaning Temple' of Huma is situated here and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name comes from its 47degrees inclination with respect to ground.
